How to Increase Your Authorial Web Presence

The number one thing that you can do to gain exposure to your book is to build a professional web presence. An author should have a web presence that helps their readers find out information about previously published and forthcoming books. It seems silly, but it can be the difference between success and flop.

Create a Website
  • Acquire a domain name, preferably your name.
  • Connect it to a website or blog. If you choose to use a blog, then select a platform that allows you to create multiple pages. Tumblr is a great choice and easy to create with minimal tech knowledge.
  • Other options include WordPress, Weebly, Squarespace, etc…
  • Customize the SEO to help readers find your book or author name in browser searches.
  • Build concise, informative pages (bio, book, news, etc…).
  • Create a testimonial/review page on your site that allows readers to easily review your book.
  • If you choose to blog or add a blog to a website, decide how often you will publish and what you plan to write about. We would suggest not writing about writing. Every author seems to be doing this…separate yourself and write about a hobby or perhaps something that occurs in your books…

Sync Your Social Media to Website
  • Add your social media accounts to your website.
  • If you don’t have social media, then I suggest starting out with a blog service such as Tumblr because serves as both a social community and a writing outlet. OF course, you could just create a website with a blog along with a few SM accounts that share your posts....
  • Add your website URL to your social media accounts.
  • After creating your website, reach out to your social media connections asking for reviews if they have purchased your book.
Spread Your Social Wings
  • Spend 1-2 hours per week scheduling social media posts. You don’t need to do more than that. Be sure to allow time to respond to followers. Connecting is what builds readership.
  • Register for Twitter, if desired. Set your blog posts to automatically post to twitter upon publication.
  • Create an author Facebook page and begin using it instead of your personal profile. Write and schedule one post per week. You may need to do more if you are adding readings or events.
  • Register for Google Authorship.
  • Register for Amazon Author Central. Don’t forget to sync blog’s rss feed to the page. Add all social media accounts to this page. Fill the page out completely.
  • Send a message to current bloggers or writers that you follow letting them know that you have created a website/blog. Ask them to connect with you. Perhaps offer to guest post on their site and for them to guest post on your blog.
  • Register as an author on Goodreads.
  • Contact podcasts you love and see if you can get involved
