COPY EDITING

$50.00

Careful sentence-level editing for writers who want clean, clear prose without losing their voice. Copy editing comes after major revision and before proofreading. At this stage, the manuscript’s structure, scenes, chapters, arguments, or overall shape should already be mostly settled. The goal is not to rethink the entire project. The goal is to polish the writing so it reads clearly, consistently, and professionally while still sounding like you.

During a copy edit, I review the manuscript at the sentence level and look for issues with grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, clarity, consistency, tone, word choice, repetition, clunky transitions, confusing phrasing, problematic language, and uneven flow.

This is a careful, respectful edit. I am not here to sand down your style, strip away your voice, or make every sentence sound “standard.” I am here to help the work become cleaner, stronger, and easier for readers to move through. Copy editing is billed by the hour. Purchasing this service reserves the first hour of editing and includes a 15-minute consultation to discuss the scope of the project, your goals, and what level of editing your manuscript needs.

How It Works

After you reserve your first hour of copy editing, I will reach out to schedule a 15-minute consultation. During that conversation, we will discuss the project, where you are in the editorial process, what kind of support you need, and whether copy editing is the right next step. I may also ask to see a sample of the manuscript so I can better understand the condition of the work and estimate how many hours the project may require. Some manuscripts need a light polish. Others need deeper sentence-level attention. The goal is to give you a realistic sense of scope before we move forward. Once the scope is clear, I will begin with the reserved first hour. If the project requires additional time, I will let you know and invoice accordingly. Payment plans are available for larger projects.

What Copy Editing Includes

Copy editing may address grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, word choice, repetition, awkward phrasing, sentence clarity, confusing syntax, unnecessary wordiness, inconsistent tone, uneven flow, clunky transitions, and style deviations. It may also include attention to consistency across the manuscript, including names, timelines, formatting choices, recurring terms, and stylistic patterns. The purpose is to make the manuscript cleaner and more readable while preserving the author’s meaning, rhythm, and voice.

Important Note

Copy editing is not the same as developmental editing, manuscript analysis, or proofreading. If the manuscript still needs major work on structure, pacing, argument, character development, organization, or overall shape, I may recommend a different editorial service before copy editing. Proofreading comes after copy editing and is the final pass before publication. Copy editing is the polish before that final proof.
